DALLAS — A day at the lake is a common summer activity for North Texas residents to beat the heat. but this year, that common activity has turned tragic for many.
A recent string of drownings and boating accidents has prompted law enforcement to offer safety tips to boaters and swimmers.
Here's a list of all water-related accidents in North Texas this summer:
June 1
On June 1, a Lewisville Fire Department dive team and TWRD game wardens recovered the body of a 27-year-old man.
Witnesses told authorities the man jumped off a boat and didn't resurface.
June 3
Dallas Fire Rescue recovered the body of 51-year-old Jose Martin Tamez-Prado on June 3.
DFR says they were responding to a call of a man driving his car into the water. When crews arrived, they jumped into the water and pulled Tamez-Prado out. They attempted to perform CPR, but Tamez-Prado was unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
June 23
On June 23, a man was hospitalized after being severely injured by a boat propeller.
According to Tarrant Regional Water District, a man fell overboard from a boat on Eagle Mountain Lake. A woman operating the boat then reversed the engine, striking the man with the propeller and severely injuring him.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens arrested the woman involved for boating while intoxicated.
June 24
On June 24, the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office recovered the body of a missing kayaker.
The man was identified as Anthony Villarreal, and he was missing since June 19. A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter spotted his kayak tangled in trees on the Trinity River.
His body was found floating near U.S. 175 in Crandall.
July 5
On July 5, police recovered the bodies of two men, 35-year-old Bilal Muzhir Al Khafaji Ali and 34-year-old Karawan Jasim Ghadhban Al-Behadili.
Both men were on a boat celebrating the Fourth of July the night before. They were one of about 10 people who went overboard, but they never resurfaced. Both men were laid to rest on July 8.
July 9
On July 9, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department recovered the body of a man suspected of drowning on Grapevine Lake.
Rescue teams were looking for the man since July 7 after receiving a possible drowning call. The department says the man reportedly went into the water without a life jacket and as winds picked up, the boat drifted away.
July 15
On July 15, TRWD officers and Game Wardens with Texas Parks and Wildlife recovered the body of a man, who they believe drowned, from Eagle Mountain Lake.
The officers were called to the scene after hearing reports of a man who jumped out of a broken-down watercraft. The man never resurfaced.
July 22
The body of 28-year-old Jose Santamaria was recovered on July 22 from the East Fork of the Trinity River.
The man had been reported missing along with three other kayakers. Rescue crews pulled the other three people from the water. Two of them were hospitalized.
Santamaria's body was recovered four hours after the four were reported missing.
July 23
On July 23, 38-year-old Pascual Garcia Torres died in the West Fork of the Trinity River after saving two young boys from the water.
According to Garcia Torres’s sister-in-law, Valeria Perez, the family was out fishing at the park when they witnessed two boys struggling to swim. Perez said the family didn’t know the two boys, but Garcia Torres instantly jumped in to rescue them.
His family has launched a GoFundMe to raise enough money to send Garcia Torres’s body back to his home country. It’s his widow’s wish.
July 29
On July 29, Fort Worth police recovered a body from Lake Como.
Authorities received a call about a body floating in the water, and when they arrived they found and recovered it. They also determined the person was dead.
The name of the victim has not been released, and the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office has not revealed the cause of death yet. Fort Worth PD is investigating.
Aug. 8
On Aug. 8, a CrossFit Games athlete died after a reported drowning in a Fort Worth lake on Thursday during the first day of competition in the multi-day event, officials said.
CrossFit officials in a news conference confirmed that a CrossFit athlete drowned in the swim portion of the CrossFit Game's first event. The event was held at Marine Creek Lake, near the Tarrant County College Northwest campus.
The victim was identified as Lazar Dukic, 28, of Serbia, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office. Dukic was pronounced dead at 10:24 a.m., the medical examiner records said.
Sept. 2
On the evening of Sept. 2, the body of a 23-year-old man was recovered from Lake Lewisville.
Officials say the area of the lake where the man went underwater and never resurfaced was about 45 feet deep. The Lewisville Fire Department's dive team located his body using sonar equipment.
