Missing kayaker drowns in Trinity River, officials say

Kaufman County officials said the missing kayaker, Anthony Villarreal, was found Sunday in the Trinity River.

CRANDALL, Texas — The body of a missing kayaker was found floating in the Trinity River near Crandall Sunday, officials said.

The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office was notified of a possible missing person around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, near U.S. 175 and the Trinity River, according to a release from the Sheriff's Office.

The deputies contacted family members who told them Anthony Villarreal had been missing since Wednesday, June 19, according to the release. Family members previously located Villarreal's vehicle under the U.S. 175 bridge, where he was known to kayak, officials said.

The Crandall Fire Department received help from the Dallas Fire/Rescue Swift Water Rescue Team and the Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter, according to the release. The helicopter located Villarreal's kayak six miles south tangled in trees.

The Swift Water Rescue Team launched a boat on Farm Road 3039 and traveled north where Villarreal was recovered and pronounced dead, officials said.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy, according to the release.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is investigating because Villarreal is believed to have drowned on a public waterway, officials said.

It's the second case of someone drowning in the Trinity River over the weekend after a body was found floating in the Trinity River in Fort Worth. The two cases are not connected, police say.
