LEWISVILLE, Texas — In addition to airing every game of the 2024 NBA Finals on our station, WFAA is also hosting a special presentation called "The Pregame" before each and every matchup in the series. Head here for more information.
Parking it on the couch to watch the Dallas Mavericks play the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals instead of paying four figures to go to the AAC? You probably aren't alone.
You may need some grub, too, and a North Texas pizza restaurant has just the thing to enjoy in the comfort of your own home, all while honoring Luka Doncic. Say hello to "The Luka Pizza."
Yes, The Luka Pizza. The Luka Pizza ... is the pizza ... for you and me!
Spongebob references aside, what in the heck even is The Luka Pizza? Well, Motor City Pizza in Lewisville created this special pie in honor of Luka's favorite family recipe from back home: Potato Moussaka.
Motor City Pizza owner Greg Tierney said he found out Potato Moussaka was the childhood dish he craved most from Slovenia and so they wanted to honor him by creating the dish in pizza form. Tierney's Googling led him to this Sports Illustrated article, where Luka's mom shared the recipe for the casserole-style dish.
"It's been one of my favorite dishes since I was a kid. When I first left home (Slovenia) and my mom would come and visit I would always ask her to make it. I'd eat it the whole time she was visiting," Doncic told SI. "This dish is one my great grandmother, grandmother and mother all can make. Even today I ask for it whenever I'm feeling homesick."
Tierney then took that recipe and put it on pizza.
They started selling the pizza at the beginning of the Western Conference Finals and will continue to do so throughout the remainder of the playoffs. Since launching The Luka Pizza last week, Tierney told WFAA it has been a hit, selling over 250 from last Thursday through Sunday.
Many were sold to regular customers who saw it on the menu and wanted to try it. The owner also said they've received numerous new customers who came them simply to try the new creation after hearing about it.
Here is a look at how The Luka Pizza is made:
This isn't the first time Motor City Pizza has catered a special pie to a DFW sports team. During the Rangers' World Series run, they made a 'Texas Rangers pizza' with hot dogs, mustard, relish, Cracker Jacks, which WFAA's Teresa Woodard said on air she would eat if the Rangers won the World Series. We all know how that turned out, but no word on if she kept her word (we'll get back to you on that one).
The ingredients of the Luka Pizza include: layers of thin sliced potatoes, minced meat, seasoned cream sauce and cheese layered on top of their signature Detroit-style pizza crust, then topped with a garlic cream and fresh basil.
Tierney told WFAA they've also made a pizza in the past honoring Dak Prescott's love for Cajun food, and are workshopping a Dallas Stars themed pizza for their run in the Western Conference Final of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Dallas tips off against the Boston Celtics starting Thursday, June 6. The full schedule for the NBA Finals can be viewed here. Looks like "The Luka Pizza" could be potentially available through as late as mid-to-late June, depending on how long this final series goes.
Bon Appétit, Dallas!
