Collin County released information on the first death caused by West Nile. The case brings the total number of reported deaths in North Texas up to four.

COLLIN COUNTY, Texas — Collin County health officials announced the first death there caused by West Nile virus, bringing the total number of North Texans killed by the disease to four.

Two cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Collin County this summer, in July and August. One of those cases resulted in deaths, it's unclear when exactly the victim died, based on the Collin County arbovirus activity report.

Dallas, Denton and Tarrant counties have also reported deaths caused by West Nile.

You can protect yourself from West Nile virus by remembering the four Ds:

  • DEET: Use bug repellants containing the active ingredient DEET and follow label instructions.
  • DRESS: Wear long, loose and light-colored clothing.
  • DRAIN: Drain any standing water in or around your home or workplace.
  • DUSK to DAWN: As mosquitos are most active from dusk to dawn, limit your time outdoors during this time.

A total of 19 traps across Collin County have Mosquitos that tested positive for West Nile, according to the report.
