First West Nile Virus death reported in Dallas County this year

The patient was a woman in North Dallas with underlying health conditions, Dallas County Health and Human Services said.

DALLAS — Dallas County Health and Human Services has reported the first death from West Nile Virus in the county this year.

The patient was a woman who lived in North Dallas, suffered from underlying health conditions, and was diagnosed with West Nile Neuroinvasive Disease, DCHHS said.

DCHHS doesn't disclose any additional information about the woman due to privacy reasons.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss,” said DCHHS Director Dr. Philip Huang in a statement. “This heartbreaking tragedy underscores the critical importance of safeguarding against mosquito bites, which can transmit several diseases including WNV. With mosquito activity remaining high in Dallas County, we urge residents to follow the Four Ds to protect themselves.”

The Four Ds are as follows:

  • DEET: Use bug repellants containing the active ingredient DEET and follow label instructions.
  • DRESS: Wear long, loose and light-colored clothing.
  • DRAIN: Drain any standing water in or around your home or workplace.
  • DUSK to DAWN: As mosquitos are most active from dusk to dawn, limit your time outdoors during this time.

The woman's case was reported last Thursday, and was the sixth confirmed case of West Nile Virus in Dallas County this year.

Severe infections of West Nile Virus can cause neurologic complications like encephalitis. Milder symptoms of the virus include fever, headaches and muscle aches.

More information on the virus can be found at Dallas County's website here.
