The one time - yes, only once - it snowed in DFW on Thanksgiving

Rarely has winter weather ever impacted Turkey Day in North Texas. And it won't this year, either.

DALLAS — North Texas is in for a pleasant Thanksgiving: Turkey Day will start off chilly at around 40 degrees, but temperatures will warm up to around 60, and things look to be dry.

And that's typically what we see around here.

Our average high temp on Thanksgiving is 63 degrees, and there's only been 24 times we've seen measurable precipitation, according to National Weather Service historical data.

And the one thing we rarely see on Thanksgiving -- and almost never have -- is wintry weather.

North Texas has seen only ONE snowfall on Thanksgiving Day in recorded history, and it was far from a blizzard, or even enough to make a snowman. And only one other time has there been any wintry precipitation on Thanksgiving.

A light dusting of wintry mix and snow fell at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport on Nov. 22, 2007.

Down the road, in Irving, the Dallas Cowboys were playing the New York Jets in their annual Thanksgiving Day game at Texas Stadium.

If you remember, Texas Stadium had an opening on the roof, so sometimes the weather elements would play a factor. But that was hardly the case in 2007. It may have been cold, but there didn't seem to be much precipitation, if any, falling into the stadium, if you go back and look at the highlights.

Cowboys fans probably associate winter weather at Texas Stadium with a different Thanksgiving Day game, the 1993 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Dallas' home turf that day was covered in what looked like snow; but it was actually sleet and freezing rain.

1993 was North Texas' first known Thanksgiving with wintry precipitation, and it's still the coldest, with the high temp only reaching 35 degrees. As for the game, the Cowboys lost to the Dolphins, 16-14, after Leon Lett's blunder on a missed field goal.

Otherwise, Thanksgiving Day weather in North Texas has been largely uneventful.

The high temperature was 88 degrees in 1965, and 1914 saw 3.06 inches of rain, the most ever. Only one other Thanksgiving, in 2015, saw more than an inch of rain (2.71 inches).

And even if the weather isn't mild, the Cowboys have a solution: Their roof closes now.
