OXNARD, Calif. — Preseason training camp isn't just used for installs and team bonding. There is constant evaluation going on: Coaches and staff evaluating the personnel they have, the personnel that best fits their ideal schemes, and the personnel they still might need prior to the start of the season.
Based on what the Cowboys staff has seen, combined with preseason injuries, they felt like they needed reinforcements in the trenches.
The Cowboys earlier this week acquired defensive tackle Jordan Phillips and pass rusher Carl Lawson. According to head coach Mike McCarthy, both arrived in Oxnard on Thursday.
The Cowboys also added former Arizona State lineman Cohl Cabral to bolster the depth on the offensive line after Chuma Edoga and Earl Bostick suffered injuries.
While the evaluations of those guys will just be starting, as they try to earn a spot on the 53-man roster, the one guy whose spot is solidified: quarterback Dak Prescott.
His preseason performance isn't what's been the topic of conversation for him. In fact, McCarthy has said the signal caller "has been a top five player" throughout camp.
Instead, the one thing in question regarding Prescott: his ongoing contract negotiations.
Prescott has said time and time again that he's confident his team of agents will "get something done."
While he stood by that claim once again Thursday, he did add "good conversations are going on, I will say that."
When asked how often Prescott prefers to get updates on contract discussions during his time in Oxnard, he jokingly answered, "it depends".
The smile on his face throughout his time talking about the discussions looked like a guy who truly isn’t worried about it.
"I'm just trying to be where my feet are," Prescott said.
