Report: Spencer Dinwiddie agrees on deal to rejoin the Mavs

Dinwiddie averaged 17.4 points per game across two half-seasons over two years during his previous stint with the Dallas Mavericks.

DALLAS — Free agent guard Spencer Dinwiddie has agreed on a deal to rejoin the Dallas Mavericks, according to The Athletic's Shams Charania.

The Mavs traded for Dinwiddie just prior to the NBA's 2021-2022 season's trade deadline as part of a package that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Washington Wizards. During his time in Dallas, the now-31-year-old guard averaged 17.4 points per game across two half-seasons over two years.

He also played a key role during the Mavs' trip to the 2022 Western Conference Finals.

Dinwiddie was then traded to the Brooklyn Nets as part of the deal that brought Kyrie Irving to the Mavs just ahead of the following 2022-2023 season's trade deadline.

Last season ahead of the trade deadline, the Nets traded Dinwiddie to the Toronto Raptors, who waived him. He then signed with the Los Angeles Lakers for the remainder of the 2023-2024 season.

This is one of many moves the Mavs have made during the offseason. In late June, Dallas traded Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second round picks, to the Detroit Pistons for Quentin Grimes. The Mavs also signed forward Naji Marshall, a four-year veteran, from the New Orleans Pelicans in free agency.

The team's biggest move happened on July 1, however, when four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson agreed to a sign-and-trade deal with the Mavericks.

Dinwiddie returns to Dallas in what will likely be a reduced role compared to his first stint with the team. With Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving being the team's starting backcourt, Dinwiddie will join a bench rotation of guards that includes Dante Exum, Jaden Hardy and Quentin Grimes.

During his 10-year NBA career, Dinwiddie has posted averages of 13.3 points, 5.2 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game.
