On this day in history: The Dallas Mavericks take home first NBA Championship

As the Mavs look to fight back in the 2024 NBA Finals, we look back on their historic championship run in 2011.

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks are looking to come back against the Boston Celtics as they currently sit 0-2 in the NBA Finals.

While an NBA Championship may seem like a lofty goal in these circumstances, things weren't looking so tough 13 years ago today.

On June 12, 2011, the Dallas Mavericks, comprised of starting five Tyson Chandler, Jason Kidd, Shawn Marion, Dirk Nowitzki and DeShawn Stevenson, defeated the highly-touted Miami Heat in a 4-2 series.

Similar to this year, the series didn't start off so hot for the 2011 Mavs.

After dropping Game 1 in Miami, the Mavs were able to split the series 1-1 before heading back to Dallas for Game 3.

Despite the familiar home crowd, the Mavs fell short in Game 3, 88-86 -- making it a 2-1 series in favor of the Heat.

However, it was perhaps this loss that awoke the Mavs to their destiny as they then went on a three-game win streak to take the series 4-2, securing their first NBA Championship.

So, whether today's Mavs secure another title or not, it's important to look back and appreciate the team that first brought its city to greatness.
