FC Dallas will host Inter Miami CF at Cotton Bowl Stadium

Rosters for the friendly will be shared at a later date, but sources tell WFAA that Messi is "committed and expected to play."

DALLAS — Preseason soccer is coming back to the Cotton Bowl Stadium later this month.

FC Dallas announced Friday it will host Inter Miami CF in a pre-season friendly on Monday, Jan. 22 at 5 p.m.

The Fair Park match will be the first time FC Dallas has returned to the pitch at their original home since 2009.

"We’re looking forward to playing in the Cotton Bowl and welcoming Inter Miami CF to the iconic stadium that served as our franchise’s original home,” said FC Dallas President Dan Hunt.

The big question for everyone is … will Lionel Messi play in this game? Rosters for the friendly will be shared at a later date, but sources tell WFAA that Messi is "committed and expected to play." Another player to potentially look out for in the match would be one of Messi's former teammates who has been added to the roster in the offseason: Luis Suarez.

Suarez is the third former Barcelona teammate of Messi's to join Inter Miami alongside Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.

This will be Messi's second visit to North Texas. In August 2023, FCD lost 5-4 against Messi and Inter Miami in a Leagues Cup elimination game at Toyota Stadium. It's also the fifth match-up all-time, including preseason, between Inter Miami and FC Dallas.

FC Dallas forward Bernard Kamungo and defender Nkosi Tafari have been called up to the U.S. Men’s National Team January Camp. Both are expected to be back in Dallas in time for the friendly.

“Dallas is a dynamic city with deep soccer roots, and this highly anticipated match will certainly generate even more soccer buzz as we get ready to host the FIFA World Cup 2026," said Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson.

Last month, FC Dallas released their 2024 MLS regular season schedule, and the team will not play Inter Miami this year.
