FRISCO, Texas — Two FC Dallas players have been called up to the United States men's national team (USMNT) for January camp.
Forward Bernard Kamungo and defender Nkosi Tafari have been invited to the USMNT senior team camp from Jan. 8 through Jan. 16, just ahead of the team's friendly match on Jan. 20 against Slovenia in San Antonio, Texas.
Kamungo and Tafari are two of 17 players who have never appeared for the national team before, joining goalkeepers Drake Callender, Roman Celentano and Patrick Schulte; defenders Nathan Harriel, Ian Murphy and Jackson Ragen; midfielders Joshua Atencio, Aziel Jackson, Jack McGlynn, Timmy Tillman and Sean Zawadzki; and forwards Esmir Bajraktarevic, Diego Luna, Duncan McGuire and Brian White.
All 25 players who were called up for USMNT January camp are MLS players.
Kamungo is one of thirteen players who are under 23 and age-eligible for the Olympics, which starts July 24 in France. The U.S. qualified for the tournament for the first time since 2008. Each team can select three wild-card players over the age limit.
Kamungo, 22, placed No.19 in Major League Soccer’s 2023 22 Under 22 list which honors the best young players in the league. He scored six goals in 16 MLS regular season matches in 2023.
Tafari, 26, anchored one of the best defenses in MLS, allowing the third-fewest goals in the regular season (40), and ranking third in GAA (1.00). He also scored three goals and recorded four assists in the 2023 season.
