CHICAGO — As Texas Democrats converged in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention to formally nominate Kamala Harris, Texas Republicans have sought to portray Harris and Democrats messaging at the convention as a continuation of President Joe Biden’s policies.

In particular, Texas Republicans have sought to criticize Harris’ record on immigration and public safety issues.

“The messaging was clear and consistent: they’re committed to doubling down on failed policies that have already put our economy in jeopardy, weakened our borders, and promoted a divisive, woke socialist agenda,” Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick shared in an update. “Under this administration, we’ve seen skyrocketing inflation, chaos at the southern border, and a relentless push towards extreme policies that are out of step with everyday Americans. The DNC’s decision to move forward with Harris signals that we can expect more of the same if they remain in power.”

Gov. Greg Abbott on social media also criticized Harris and the Biden administration’s handling of the border as the DNC got underway Thursday.

“When Joe Biden and Kamala Harris took office, border crossings skyrocketed,” Abbott wrote. “It will be even worse if Kamala becomes president.”

Abbott and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz addressed the Republican National Convention on immigration issues in July.

Cruz, who’s running for re-election against challenger Congressman Colin Allred, D-Dallas, who’s speaking at the Democratic National Convention Thursday, has sought to tie Allred to Harris’ and Biden’s policies and called Allred out for trying to distance himself from her.

Cruz on social media said, “Kamala Harris is running on letting the Trump tax cuts expire and raising taxes.” Harris released a tax plan that includes $5 trillion in tax increases over a decade, the New York Times reports. No one making less than $400,000 a year would see their taxes go up under the plan.

Congresswoman Beth Van Duyne, R-Irving, also criticized Harris and the Biden administration’s handling of the border on social media during the DNC.

“Harris has been an integral part in the Biden-Harris administration’s failed policy agenda,” Van Duyne said. “From tearing open our southern border to creating skyrocketing inflation, she’s behind every major decision.”
