A 21-year-old man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend's 1-year-old daughter.
Allante Edwards was sentenced as part of a plea agreement in the January 2017 death of Olivia Cangemi, Dallas County court records show.
The Irving man threw the baby across the room and used a shoe and a toy to strike the baby, court and police records show.
Edwards called police on Jan. 4, 2017, to report Olivia was unresponsive at an Irving home. He was taking care of Olivia and her two siblings, a 3-year-old girl and a 6-month-old boy.
Olivia was taken to Children's Medical Center Dallas where she remained until she was taken off life support days later.
She suffered a severe brain injury and other internal injuries. Police records show she also had healing rib fractures.
Her 6-month-old brother, Allante Jr., also had a bite mark on his cheek, records show.
Olivia's mother told WFAA in 2017 that her daughter helped at least three other children through organ donation. The baby's heart was among the organs the family donated.
"She was the most sweetest, smart, beautiful little girl I have ever seen in my life," Jennifer Cangemi told WFAA.
Edwards pleaded guilty last week. A trial had been scheduled to begin next week.
The mother did not comment at the time on her boyfriend's involvement in Olivia's death.
