Tens of thousands are without power in Kaufman County after Tuesday morning's storms

The FBC Kaufman is serving as a shelter for anyone who needs water, food, or a place to charge their things.

KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — As of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, almost 14,000 people were still without power in Kaufman County following Tuesday morning's wicked storm that put North Texas in a vice.

The county has issued a disaster declaration, and the First Baptist Church of Kaufman will serve as an emergency shelter for anyone needing food, water, or a place to charge their things.

Damage was spotted throughout the county from the air. Downed power poles, tree limbs, and a few buildings had structural damage. One home under construction even collapsed on itself.

Storm damage was also seen at North Forney High School. In downtown Terrell, an old warehouse built in the early 1900s is likely a total loss after it was ripped to shreds and partially collapsed.

The owner kept antique cars in the building and was working on refurbishing several for sale.

This is the second time the county has issued a disaster declaration in May.

The county judge declared a disaster after widespread flooding of up to 12 inches and severe wind damage threatened life and property.
