FORT WORTH, Texas — The three firefighters injured while responding to a fire Monday evening are expected to be OK, the Fort Worth Fire Department told WFAA.
The fire happened just before 6 p.m. in the 1200 block of East Cannon Street. When crews got there, the fire had already engulfed the home. Firefighters fought the flames until they dramatically changed.
FWFD said the incident commander called for an evacuation and called a “mayday” after two firefighters were trying to escape from a second-story window.
WFAA spoke with Craig Trojacek, the PIO for FWFD. Trojacek said one of the men fell through a carport roof.
He said the three firefighters that were injured were veterans with the department; a captain, a lieutenant, and a firefighter.
“Last night there were three families that got that phone call, that you hope never has to be made,” said Trojacek.
He said the captain and lieutenant were released from the hospital Monday evening, and the firefighter is still recovering in the hospital. Trojacek did speak with the firefighter’s wife and was told he was in good spirits.
“He's got family that's up there with him they say he's basically been up since it happened,” said Trojacek.
Kenneth Spencer's mother lives across the street from the home that caught on fire. He said his sister called him frantically.
“I feel a deep sense of sadness by looking at this,” said Spencer. “All these people in this area are pretty shocked,” he said.
Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire. Trojacek said no one was inside when the fire started, and the person who lived there is getting help from the American Red Cross.
