DALLAS — It appears the show will go on for Dallas’ historic Inwood Theatre. A lockout notice placed on the door of the theater in Inwood Village this week was removed, and the doors were back open as of Saturday.
A DFW theatre troupe called Los Bastardos has performed a live shadow cast during showings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at the theater on the last Saturday of each month since 2011 and will have their show at the theater as usual tonight. “It was kind of a little jump scare with them being closed…we love them a lot, they treat us very well, and they’re very special to us, “ said Victor Entropy of the theater troupe. “The Inwood is our home theater…being back and it being more stable, I think everyone’s definitely going to be on their A-game today.”
The Inwood Theatre opened in 1947 and was restored in 2005. The Art Deco-style theater has three screens with seating options, including couches, loveseats, and lounge chairs. Also known for its murals, the lobby of the theater features an original, underwater-themed mural by artist Perry Nichols, according to the theater’s website.
The Inwood Lounge, a full-service martini bar, was added to the theater’s lobby when Inwood Theater was renovated.
The Inwood Theater is Landmark Theatres' only Texas theater, according to their website. There was previously another Landmark Theatre in Houston's River Oaks neighborhood, but it closed in March 2021. Landmark, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, is known as the nation's largest specialized theater chain dedicated to independent cinema with theaters in about 20 states.
The Inwood has been owned by Landmark since Landmark was acquired by 2929 Entertainment (co-owned by Mark Cuban and Todd Waggoner) from Oaktree Capital in 2003. Cohen Media Group bought the theater chain in 2018. Cohen Media Group is an independent theatrical distribution and production company that has released multiple Academy Award-nominated films, including "Timbuktu", "Mustang," and 2017's Academy Award-winner, "The Salesman."
