DALLAS — A DFW theater troupe called Los Bastardos performs a live shadow cast during showings of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" at the Inwood Theater on the last Saturday of every month.
The group says they're hopeful the show will go on Saturday despite a lockout notice posted on the door of the Inwood Theater this week and a phone message saying the theater is "temporarily closed."
"The Inwood is our home theater, and we are saddened by its current closure," the group told WFAA. "However, the Inwood is only closed temporarily. The show for Saturday is still planned to run as scheduled, but we will make a public announcement on our Facebook, Instagram and [website] if anything changes. We anticipate knowing more come Friday or Saturday, and very much hope to be gracing their stage this weekend."
The lockout notice on the door is dated Feb. 19 and says the lease, which dates back to 1988, was terminated because of a default and that the theater was repossessed.
The art deco-style Inwood Theatre opened in 1947 and was restored in 2005. The theater has three screens with seating options including couches, loveseats, and lounge chairs. Also known for its murals, the lobby of the theater features an original, underwater-themed mural by artist Perry Nichols, according to the theater’s website.
The Inwood Lounge, a full-service martini bar, was also added to the theater’s lobby when Inwood Theater was refurbished.
The Inwood Theater is Landmark Theatres' only Texas theater, according to their website. There was another Landmark Theatre in Houston's River Oaks neighborhood, but it closed in March 2021. Landmark, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, is known as the nation's largest specialized theater chain dedicated to independent cinema with theaters in about 20 states.
The Inwood Theater has been owned by Landmark since Landmark was acquired by 2929 Entertainment (co-owned by Mark Cuban and Todd Waggoner) from Oaktree Capital in 2003. Cohen Media Group bought the theater chain in 2018. Cohen Media Group is an independent theatrical distribution and production company that has released multiple Academy Award-nominated films, including "Timbuktu", "Mustang," and 2017's Academy Award-winner, "The Salesman."
Landmark has reportedly closed other theaters recently, including in Los Angeles, Albany and Illinois.
WFAA has reached out to Landmark Theatres and Inwood Village for comment. WFAA will update this story as additional information becomes available.
