Granbury police say no drugs were detected in candy believed to be tainted after 8 students were hospitalized

After a full lab analysis, Granbury PD says they found the candy that was confiscated at Granbury Middle School did not contain any illegal substances.

GRANBURY, Texas — Eight middle school students were hospitalized after eating candy that their parents and authorities initially believed was laced with narcotics.

After a full lab analysis, the Granbury Police Department say they found that the candy that was confiscated at Granbury Middle School on Dec. 12 did not contain any illegal substances.

"Blood tests for all students showed negative results for any type of drug. The candy was taken to the DEA lab in Dallas and tested, and it also showed negative results for any type of drug," the department said in a statement sent to WFAA Tuesday afternoon.

The candy that was distributed by a student tested negative for THC last week, police say.

Four students were taken to Lake Granbury Medical Center with reported symptoms of being under the influence of some type of drug, officials say. Parents took the other four to get checked out at the hospital.

Two of the eighth-grade students who ate the candy shared their experiences with WFAA after being taken to the emergency room. All the students affected are OK.

"It is not known what caused the reported issues with the students, but the testing indicates that it was not caused by any kind of drug," the department said.

The majority of the students have returned to school, but the source of the symptoms is still a mystery.

Granbury ISD asks those with questions or concerns to reach out to contact the school administration.
