Where have mosquitos tested positive for West Nile virus in DFW -- so far?

Summer has officially started and mosquito season is here too. At least four cities have reported a mosquito testing positive for West Nile virus.

DALLAS — West Nile Virus peaks in the U.S. from mid-August to early September, but mosquitos are already testing positive for the virus around North Texas.

Four locations in three counties have reported mosquitos testing positive for West Nile. The virus is a mosquito-borne illness and its severity can vary depending on an individual's immune system and existing medical conditions, according to a release from Medical City Fort Worth.

Most people infected won't experience symptoms but about 25% may develop a mild illness known as West Nile fever and in rare cases, the Virus can cause neurological symptoms including meningitis, weakness, paralysis and seizures, according to the National Library of Medicine National Center for Biotechnology Information.

“Most mild symptoms can be managed at home with rest and hydration,” Dr. Anupama Chennupati, an expert in infectious diseases at Medical City Fort Worth said in a release. “However, if you experience severe symptoms, including neurological issues, you should seek medical attention immediately at your nearest emergency room.”

Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms because West Nile Virus has no specific anti-viral treatment, according to the release. You can protect yourself from West Nile Virus by following the four Ds, according to the release:

  • Dusk/Dawn: Limit time outside from dusk to dawn, when mosquitos are most active
  • DEET: Use FDA-approved insect repellents that contain DEET
  • Dress: Wear long sleeves and pants to minimize skin exposure outside
  • Drain: Eliminate standing water around the home to reduce mosquito breeding sites

When a West Nile Virus-carrying mosquito is identified, local authorities may spray mosquito-killing agents to control the mosquito population. No human vaccine is available for the West Nile Virus.
