Here's why Fort Worth ISD has to pay former superintendent more than half a million dollars

Dr. Angelica Ramsey resigned as Fort Worth ISD's superintendent after two years on the job on Sept. 24. Now, the district has to pay up.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Fort Worth ISD will have to pay more than $500,000 to buy out outgoing Superintendent Dr. Angelica Ramsey.

The board voted 8-1 to accept Ramsey's resignation on Sept. 24, and her resignation went into effect Tuesday. As a part of the resignation agreement between Ramsey and the district, Fort Worth ISD will pay her two installments of $247,961.58, the first of which will be paid out this week.

In addition to those payments, Ramsey is also getting $48,539.83 for her unused PTO and sick days. $28,690 is also coming out of the district's pockets "for the Purchase of Service Credit and Supplemental Retirement Plan Contributions for the 2023-24 school year," which will be paid to Ramsey in January.

In total, Fort Worth ISD will spend over $570,000 to buy Dr. Ramsey out of her contract.

However, while Ramsey no longer serves as superintendent, she is still an employee of the district until Aug. 30, 2025, per the agreement. Her contract was initially set to expire in July 2026.

Until then, Ramsey "will be the District's Ambassador for Public Relations and shall be placed on school-related leave with pay and benefits." While she serves under the new role, Ramsey will be paid her usual annual salary of $335,000 plus stipends, a Fort Worth ISD spokesperson confirmed to WFAA.

Between the buyout and the salary for her new role, Ramsey stands to make over $900,000 over the next year from the district.

Dr. Ramsey's resignation comes after public outcry from teachers, community members and board members. The district's woes were also addressed in a letter from Mayor Mattie Parker and several community stakeholders

In her own statement, Ramsey thanked the board of trustees for allowing her to serve the district.

Fort Worth ISD still has not named an interim superintendent. That move will likely come during the upcoming board meeting next Tuesday.
