FORT WORTH, Texas — After two years with Fort Worth ISD, Superintendent Angélica Ramsey will no longer lead the district.
On Tuesday night, the Fort Worth ISD board voted 8-1 to accept Dr. Ramsey's voluntary resignation. Dr. Camille Rodriguez cast the lone "no" vote.
The ousting vote came after a nearly four-hour closed-door executive session involving board members, lawyers, and Dr. Ramsey.
As of late Tuesday night, it's unclear when Ramsey's last day is, who will lead the district as interim superintendent, and if Ramsey is receiving a buyout.
The Fort Worth ISD school board also met last week to discuss Superintendent Ramsey’s performance. The board met behind closed doors for two hours with lawyers and without Dr. Ramsey.
Before that executive session began, about 20 people, teachers, parents, and taxpayers, came to express their frustration with the district and Dr. Ramsey. Some speakers defended Dr. Ramsey, at least in part, accusing the board of making her a scapegoat.
“The superintendent might not be the problem,” one speaker told board members.
“It’s all of you together as a board, you have made the wrong decision over and over and over,” another added.
Ramsey's departure comes just three weeks after Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker sent a letter to trustees that called student test scores unacceptable. Forty-five other community leaders cosigned it, including former mayors, current city council members, nonprofit executives, and faith leaders.
That letter came one month after the school board voted down Superintendent Ramsey's five-year plan for the district. Parker's spokesperson said Ramsey "reached out to the mayor for help" after that vote, which prompted the mayor to begin drafting her letter.
“On August 27, Mayor spoke on behalf of over 40 community leaders, delivering a letter that served as both a public call for change AND a renewed commitment to ensuring every student has access to an excellent education. That stands tonight," a spokesperson for Mayor Mattie Parker wrote to WFAA after the board's decision Tuesday. "Furthermore, Mayor fully supports the school board as they work to identify the transformative leader our district deserves. Together, we have the potential to make FWISD the nation’s premier public-school district.”
Dr. Ramsey led FWISD since 2022. Her contract was set to expire on July 26, 2026. According to that contract, the superintendent's salary is $335,000.
