Fort Worth police searching for suspect in latest West 7th shooting

It was obviously a gut punch to hear that we've had another shooting in the area," said Councilwoman Elizabeth Beck.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Crime scene tape marks the spot where the latest shooting happened in Fort Worth's West 7th Street entertainment district.

It's another shooting that Fort Worth Councilwoman Elizabeth Beck learned about over the weekend shortly after it happened early Sunday morning. When you look up in the same spot, there is a security camera that may have recorded the shooting.

"It was obviously a gut punch. Another shooting in the entertainment district," Beck said.

Early Sunday morning, Fort Worth bicycle cops rushed Currie and Bledsoe Street for a person shot. City leaders say a man was fighting with his girlfriend. Another man stepped in to help, and police suspect he shot the boyfriend. The boyfriend is in critical condition. The man who intervened took off.

"This was an instance of someone taking action into their own hands, and we have plenty of police officers down there," Beck said. "Bars have security."

Security here is a priority for Beck who was elected to represent people in District 9 in 2021. This latest shooting follows two others that happened recently in the West 7th District.

One shooting happened just two weeks ago where police say a 29-year-old man surrendered in the murder of another man on Crockett Street. Then last September, TCU student Wes Smith was shot and killed on West 7th by a stranger. There are cameras like these all over the entertainment district. Police confirmed they are combing multiple videos to identify Sunday morning's shooter.

For people who see arguments around 7th Street bars, Beck wants them paying close attention, playing a role in making the area safe for partygoers there to have a good time.

"If you see something or someone that needs assistance, go find a trained professional to help navigate that for you," Beck said.

Quickly reporting arguments among people in the bar district is something Beck said she believes can help make 7th Street safer.
