FORT WORTH, Texas — Police have not yet identified the person who shot a man in Fort Worth's West 7th entertainment district Sunday morning, they say.
Officials say they found a man with a gunshot wound in the 2800 block of Bledsoe Street at 12:23 a.m. Medics took the victim to the hospital in critical condition.
Authorities say they believe the shooting happened after an argument. The shooting is still under investigation and no one has been arrested, Fort Worth police said.
Sunday's shooting is the third in the entertainment district in about six months. Two weeks ago, a 29-year-old wanted for killing another man on Crockett Street turned himself in to police.
Fort Worth officers also chased a suspected drunk driver through the district on Jan. 27. The man hit at least one car, two pedestrians, and crashed into a traffic light pole.
In September, a stranger for no apparent reason shot and killed TCU student Wes Smith outside a bar off West 7th street.
Since that incident, city leaders have vowed to make the district safer. More police are patrolling the region and some bars have started scanning patrons for weapons using metal-detecting wands.
In the coming months, unarmed "ambassadors" will monitor the area and offer visitors help with parking, rideshare services and navigation. City council agreed to spend $300,000 on the program, saying the ambassadors will also serve as extra eyes and ears for police.
Crowds continue to flock to West 7th, despite the incidents. Police estimate about 10,000 people visit the district each weekend. Despite the shooting, St. Patrick's Day celebrations at bars in the area were well-attended.
But some patrons said they worry continued violence in the district will "ruin a good thing."
"People just need to chill out," Alex Zamarripa told WFAA. "We're out here just trying to have a good time."
