Family decries plea deal that gets gunman 20-year sentence

"It was a slap in my face. The justice system is not fair," said Andrea Womack after facing Cameron Hogg in court.

DALLAS — Although a Dallas man admits he shot and killed a 21-year-old female friend in October of 2022, a plea deal landed him a sentence of 20 years in a Texas prison.

"It was a slap in my face. The justice system is not fair," said Andrea Womack after facing Cameron Hogg in court.

Womack's daughter, Asia Womack, was shot four times after what the family says was trash-talking after a pickup basketball game.

"Why did you do it? Why did you do it? Why did you kill her?" Asia Womack's brother, Destine Womack, yelled at Hogg as family members were allowed to confront him in a victim impact portion of the court proceeding. "Why? Say something! You're a monster!"

"Well 20 years is not long enough," Andrea Womack said to Hogg in court. "No time is long enough, for the life of my child. And then you have the audacity to make up a lie, to try to say self-defense."

The self-defense claim, however, is why Hogg's attorney says the case did not go to trial. He says two witnesses were ready to testify that Asia Womack also had a weapon that day and would testify that she was reaching for it when Hogg fired.

"I don't see any way in the world that a jury would have found him guilty of murder when he all he is simply doing is defending himself," attorney Bret Martin said. "I can tell you that police were aware that she had a gun and was trying to pull a gun the night of the offense."

Although at the time of the shooting, a gun allegedly belonging to Asia Womack was not found.

"If she had had a gun, she should have used it," Andrea Womack said to Hogg in court. "Because you didn't have no problem using yours!"

After family members had their say in a courtroom with heavy security, Hogg was led away to begin serving 20 years in a TDCJ prison.

And a grieving mom, still not believing Hogg's claim of self-defense, did offer him this.

"I forgive Cameron. But he's going to a place that is pretty much hell," Andrea Womack said.

Which is where she says a less-than-expected sentence has left her too.

WFAA reached out to the Dallas County District Attorney's office for further explanation of the plea deal. A DA's office spokesperson said they had no comment on the case.
