Arlington police release bodycam footage after officers fatally shoot man armed with knife at motel

Arlington police officers shot and killed a man who assaulted a motel guest with a knife the day before Thanksgiving.

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Arlington Police Department released bodycam footage Monday, after a suspect who assaulted a motel guest with a knife, was shot by officers.

On Nov. 27, Arlington police fatally shot 34-year-old Edgar Ayala Garcia who they said was involved in a knife fight at a Motel 6 near AT&T Stadium, the department said in a news release.

Arlington police said officers were first called to a shopping center on the 900 block of North Collins, where Garcia had been seen kicking trash cans and throwing items. When police arrived, they could not locate him and left.

The second call came around 20 minutes later from a neighboring motel, where a guest reported that a man was banging on doors and causing a disturbance.

Investigators determined both calls involved Garcia. After police arrived in response to the first call, Garcia was seen on surveillance video ducking behind a parked vehicle as a patrol car passed by the motel.

In the video, Garica then proceeds to walk to the back door of the motel trying to break into the door with a brick-like object. He went to another door, and after kicking it, police said a guest opened the door and let him inside the building.

Garcia went to the third floor and was seen kicking the doors to multiple rooms. One of the guests opened the door and Garcia forced his way inside. It was there, police said, that Garcia pulled out a knife and got into a fight with the person staying in the room.

Neither guest knew who Garcia was, police said.

In the bodycam video, when officers arrived on the third floor of the motel, they could hear the guest screaming for help from inside the room. Officers identified themselves as police and attempted to kick in the door.

Police said the man staying in the room was bleeding and had cuts on his arm but was able to open the door while holding off Garcia. Police said they gave Garcia multiple orders to drop the knife, but he refused. Two officers fired on Garcia multiple times, police said, hitting him.

The guest managed to escape and was treated for his wounds. Police said the officers provided Garcia aid until paramedics arrived. Garcia was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said the attacks appear to be random.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Both officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, but have since returned to work. The names of the officers have not been released.

Both the criminal and administrative investigations into the shooting are ongoing, police said.
