Procession held for North Texas officer killed in the line of duty

Aerial footage showed the North Texas community come out to pay their respects to the late officer.

GREENVILLE, Texas — A procession honored the memory of fallen Greenville police officer Cooper Dawson on Wednesday.

Dawson died Tuesday morning after he was shot while pursuing a suspect Monday night, the department confirmed. 

Dawson was shot multiple times and returned fire. He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, the condition of the suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Christian Robert Sparger, is unknown. 

According to Greenville PD, a procession carrying Officer Dawson's remains into Greenville started Wednesday morning.

The procession departed from McKinney around 10 a.m., passed through Princeton and entered Greenville on Highway 380. It then circled the block in front of the Greenville Police Department and proceeded westbound on Lee Street toward US 69. From there, the procession continued south on Highway 66 and left town toward Rockwall.

The procession comes amid an outpouring of support for Officer Dawson and his loved ones. 

According to Greenville PD, funeral arrangements are being made for Officer Dawson. His funeral is planned for Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m. at Lake Pointe Church in Rockwall.

Greenville PD also said the community can drop off monetary donations at their dispatch facility located at 3000 Lee Street or mail checks to P.O. Box 1049, Greenville, TX 75403, Attn. Gwen Peterson. Please make a check payable to the Greenville Police Department and write Cooper Dawson on the memo line.
