DALLAS — We hope your 2024 doesn't start off this way – but several police departments across North Texas have warned about a recent spike in auto thefts and car break-ins.
We've covered the options you have when someone takes your car, but as a refresher, the Texas Department of Motor vehicles suggests:
File a police report, which you'll typically have to call and do
Reach out to your car insurance provider
Contact the bank that you may have a loan for the car through
One thing we didn't talk about: What to do about the items that may have been taken from or with the vehicle!
This may surprise you: The Texas Department of Insurance says if thieves take a laptop or other valuable items from your car, that's probably covered by your home or renter's insurance – not your car insurance.
Comprehensive auto coverage will usually cover the vehicle theft itself, as well as repair costs from any break-in damages.
You'll need to check your policy, but most cover custom parts and equipment such as upgraded car stereos or speakers.
There's no full proof way to ensure this doesn't happen to you, but there are some things you can do to make your car less attractive to thieves.
The Texas Department of Insurance says to always lock your car and take the keys and any valuables with you with you.
Park in well-lit areas, and to consider installing a visible anti-theft device or use a wheel lock if possible.
As always, if you have a traffic concern in your area, you can email us here.
