DALLAS — An autonomous vehicle company will begin mapping Dallas sidewalks in the coming months as it prepares to deploy "personal delivery devices" in the city, according to a memo from city staff to the Dallas mayor and city council members.
Avride, a company that develops autonomous vehicles and delivery robots, told the city they plan to map sidewalks in and around the Central Business District, according to the memo. The company plans to begin mapping the area over the next few months before using the devices to make deliveries.
In October, Avride announced a multiyear partnership to use delivery robots and autonomous vehicles for Uber and Uber Eats deliveries.
The partnership launched in Austin this month and the company plans to expand to Dallas and other US cities, the memo reads.
Avride personal delivery devices have six wheels and a top speed of 5 mph. It can carry up to 44 pounds and is designed to operate on sidewalks and paved surfaces, the memo states.
Other autonomous delivery robots also have plans to begin rolling out in Dallas. Wing, a subsidiary of Google parent company Alphabet, recently announced its plans to partner with Serve Robotics to begin autonomous deliveries in Dallas, the company said.
