Free live music, tribute concerts, 'Lord of the Rings' and more: Things to do in DFW this weekend

North Texas is kicking off the first weekend of 2024 with a free weekend festival and blasts from the past.

DALLAS — HAPPY NEW YEAR, NORTH TEXAS!

Before we all rush into our resolutions for the future, let's take a second to breathe and enjoy the past and present. The are plenty of events in Dallas-Fort Worth to help with that.

You don't need us to tell you it's COLD outside, but keep in mind that this weekend is starting and ending with rain chances.

Here's a look at what's happening in North Texas:

Friday, Jan. 5

Live Music Revival (Richardson/Dallas, all weekend)

Celebrate the local music scene with back-to-back performances all weekend FOR FREE.

The Live Music Revival will be on and poppin' from Thursday through Sunday. Performers will be at Six Springs Tavern in Richardson and Opening Bell Coffee in Dallas.

The shows start at 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, then at 2 p.m. for Saturday and Sunday.

If you don't get a ticket ahead of time, the cover at the door is $10.

Thanks so very much for your support Jessica Waffles, we are hoping that this will be the start for many future events...

Saturday, Jan. 6

Tribute shows (Dallas, Arlington)

No need to take those old records off the shelf, and you don't have to listen to the music by yourself. If you think today's music doesn't have the same soul, here's a chance from old time rock and roll.

You can head to House of Blues Dallas for the Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular. The event website describes the event as a "smash hit multi-media laser and light show featuring the music of Pink Floyd 'as you've never seen before.'" The show runs from 8-10 p.m. with tickets starting at $30.

Take the family back to 1999 at the Legacy of Prince show in Arlington. The tribute show started in Dallas two years ago, and the Purple Party has been poppin' ever since. Tickets start at $25 and the show starts at 8 p.m.

Celebrate David Bowie's birthday with a tribute show at the Granada Theater. The Thin White Dukes will host the celebration with the Neil Young tribute band Psycho Pony. Tickets range from $15-$23. The show starts at 8 p.m.

There are a few more tribute shows happening on Friday. Check out the day's "Other events" list; tribute shows are in bold.
