Tropical Storm Hanna may strengthen into a Hurricane before landfall Saturday

Tropical Storm Hanna, possibly Hurricane Hanna will move into South Texas this weekend bringing heavy rain and strong winds.

Updated: 5:30 p.m. Friday with the latest forecast.

FRIDAY EVENING UPDATE: The latest data and forecast with Hanna doesn't bring great news for South Texas. The National Hurricane Center has issued Hurricane Warnings for a portion of the Texas coast... including Corpus.

The latest forecast track of Hanna remains unchanged. Landfall of a Category 1 Hurricane with winds up to 75 MPH will be possible around midday Saturday.

Tropical Storm Hanna has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and will move into South Texas this weekend.

It is the earliest "H" storm on record. The eighth-named storm of Hurricane Season normally arrives in late September.

The main threats from this storm will be rounds of heavy rain and gusty winds. Rainfall totals through this weekend of two to six or more inches will be common along the Texas coast and in South Texas. This could lead to flash flooding in areas that see the most rain.

Strongest winds will be mainly confined to coastal areas, but gusty winds will likely spread inland as well.

For North Texas, our impacts from this storm look to be minimal. Some increased cloud cover and spotty showers or thunderstorms will be possible this weekend. Highest coverage of rain in North Texas will come in southern areas this weekend with northern areas likely hardly seeing any rain at all. Even in southern areas, rain will be scattered and not guaranteed.

If you have weekend plans in North Texas, don't cancel them. Keep an eye on the sky and stay weather aware!

Elsewhere in the tropics

Hanna is not the only storm churning in the tropics right now.

In the Atlantic another Tropical Storm named Gonzalo is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it moves toward the Lesser Antilles islands of the Caribbean.

The storm will then move into the Caribbean Sea well south of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola.

Also right now in the Pacific is major Hurricane Douglas. Right now this storm is a Category 4 storm with winds of 130mph. It is expected to weaken, but likely move near or over portions of the Hawaiian Islands as a weak Hurricane or strong Tropical Storm this weekend into next week.
