Texas SNAP recipients can apply for funds to replace ruined groceries

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission has gotten federal approval to allow SNAP recipients to apply for replacement benefits, Gov. Abbott announced Friday.

AUSTIN, Texas — People who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits will be able to apply for benefits to replace food lost or destroyed due to the severe winter weather in Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott announced Friday.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission has received federal approval to allow SNAP recipients to apply for those replacement benefits by dialing 2-1-1, according to a news release.

SNAP recipients in need of replacement benefits will have to apply for them, whether they are regular SNAP allotments or emergency allotments provided in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the news release says. The application can be completed by dialing 2-1-1 and selecting option 2.

Recipients can also download the form to apply on the HHSC website. To limit exposure to COVID-19, recipients are encouraged to mail or fax the form to HHSC and not visit their local offices, the release says.

Applicants can mail those completed forms to the following address:

Texas Health and Human Services Commission

P.O. Box 149027

Austin, TX 78714-9027

You can also fax the form to 1-877-447-2839.
