The emergency preparation supplies sales tax holiday runs through Monday.

CLEBURNE, Texas — It’s that time of year when weather is top of mind in the Lone Star state — at least, it should be.

“Yes, you need to watch it on a regular basis because it changes all the time,” said Jessica Bridges of Rowlett’s Hardware in Cleburne.

The store is one of many across the state where you can stock up on severe weather prep kits tax-free this weekend.

“We are known to have tornadoes in the area so you always want to keep flashlights and batteries,” Bridges said.

The Texas Emergency Preparation supplies sales tax holiday runs Sat., April 24-Mon., April 26.

Large purchase items include:

  • Generators under $3,000
  • Emergency ladders and hurricane shutters under $300

Items under $75

  • Axes
  • Batteries, single or multipack (AAA cell, AA cell, C cell, D cell, 6 volt or 9 volt)
  • Can openers - nonelectric
  • Carbon monoxide detectors
  • Coolers and ice chests for food storage – nonelectric
  • Fire extinguishers
  • First aid kits
  • Fuel containers
  • Ground anchor systems and tie-down kits
  • Hatchets
  • Ice products - reusable and artificial
  • Light sources - portable self-powered (including battery-operated)
    • Examples of items include: candles, flashlights and lanterns
  • Mobile telephone batteries and mobile telephone chargers
  • Radios - portable self-powered (including battery-operated) - includes two-way and weather band radios
  • Smoke detectors
  • Tarps and other plastic sheeting

You could get them at a big box store, but the team at Rowlett’s Hardware says the sales tax holiday a perfect chance support local businesses, while also getting some local expertise.

“We’ve been here doing this for a long time,” Bridges said. “Shopping local helps the community.”
