It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas. NOT. Here's why it's been so warm this December

Christmas spirit may be high in North Texas, but Christmas-like temps? Not so much.

DALLAS — Record highs in December are probably more tolerable than record lows this time of year!

But, it definitely isn't feeling like we want, as we get closer to Christmas.

Record high Thursday

The official temperature taken at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport reached 81° Thursday afternoon. This breaks the old record set...last year.

Yep, last year (2020) on this date we actually tied the record high of 79°, which also occurred in 1907.

Possible record high Friday

And, here we go again!

Friday looks to be even warmer than we were on Thursday.

Highs will top out in the 80s for most with D-FW likely tying or getting very close to a record high.

The record high on Friday is 84° set in 1938.

A mostly warm start to December

You aren't wrong, most of this December has been warm and above normal.

In fact, all but two days so far this month have been above normal. And even those days (Dec. 7 and 8) were right at normal or only a degree below normal.

Through Thursday, this is the 6th warmest start to December on record.

We'll see where December ranks by the end of the month, but it does look warm most of next week, as well.

Why is it so warm?

This winter is a La Niña winter, which favors warmer and drier weather in North Texas. So far, that is coming true.

Cold air has been locked in Canada, and a lack of snowfall across most of the country that should have snow on the ground has kept temps mild not only in North Texas, but across a good part of the country as well.

So, what's in store for the rest of the winter?

Overall, it will likely be warmer and drier than average. However, it can still get cold. And we can still get wintry weather. Just because it has been a warm start to the winter does not mean the rest of the winter will be exactly like this.
