Nonprofit steps in to help Kaufman County residents repair flood damage

“It had to be God that fixed this whole situation. He orchestrated the whole thing,” said homeowner Walter Rivers.

KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — Neighbors say flooding in the 100 block of Love Street in Kaufman County is not uncommon, but having volunteers come in to repair the damage for free is.

“It had to be God that fixed this whole situation. He orchestrated the whole thing,” said homeowner Walter Rivers.

Rivers said by some miracle, the Texas Baptist Men Texans on Mission chose his home and two others on his block to help.

“They came in and they wanted to make sure we was all right first,” Rivers said. “Then they came in and took out all of the slop.”

At the end of October, flash flooding filled Rivers' home with 18 inches of water.

“When we first got up, it was about ankle high,” Rivers said. “But then once we open the door to see what was going on, it came up to over a foot.

The water  left thousands of dollars worth of damage, a mess Rivers said his family simply cant afford to fix.

Luckily, they wont have to.

“So we're from Marble Falls, about a four-hour drive,” said TBM volunteer Philip Brown.

Brown and his team made the trek to Kaufman County to give their time and skills, expecting nothing in return.

“Because of what Christ has done for me, I just am glad to be able to help out them and kind of give back,” Brown said.

A gesture that makes those on the receiving end of the kindness, emotional.

Rivers said he’s more than thankful and hopes he and his neighbors can get a permanent fix for the frequent flooding, so they wont need TBM’s help again.
