TEXAS, USA — An arctic front is heading to Texas, bringing with it single-digit temperatures and subzero wind chills!
Temperatures are not expected to get above freezing until Saturday and with the hard freeze, you’ll want to protect your vehicle.
What to expect: Single-digit temperatures and subzero wind chills are headed to Texas by the end of the week
Experts say before it gets too cold out, drive your car around and look under the hood to make sure everything’s running properly. According to AAA, you should ‘B.E.T.’ on your car. That stands for Battery, Engine and Tires.
Your Battery
If your battery is more than three years old, get it checked out by a professional and try to park your car inside a garage to keep the battery from draining.
Your Engine
Make sure your liquids are all set. For instance, make sure you have wiper fluid instead of water.
Your Tires
When the temperature drops, so will your tire pressure. You'll want to make sure your tires have the proper pressure in them.
The bottom line – if you need a mechanic to look at your car before the freeze, take it in.
The good news is that we’re not expecting any precipitation with this arctic front, so hazardous road conditions shouldn’t be an issue.
Also, AAA says to make sure you have an emergency kit in your car. That includes a blanket or extra coat and gloves in case your car breaks down and you need to stay warm. Make sure you have a phone and charger, a flashlight with extra batteries, something to drink, snacks and first aid supplies. You always want to have jumper cables with you. AAA also says to always keep your tank at least half full.
If something happens while you're out on the road and need help, TxDOT's roadside assistance number is 800-525-5555. Of course, if it's an emergency, call 911. And for road conditions, call 800-452-9292.
