Monday morning storms prompt a WFAA Weather Impact Alert Day

A line of strong storms is possible early Monday morning and could create some problems during the morning rush.

DALLAS —

WFAA Weather Alert Day

Monday has been declared WFAA Weather Alert Day by the WFAA Weather Team. A line of storms will move through the DFW area during the morning hours (6 a.m. to 9 a.m.) with a chance at segments of the line of storms being severe. The main threat will be strong wind gusts (up to 60mph), but the tornado threat is not completely zero. Within the line of storms, it is possible for a brief, spin-up tornado, but the overall threat is low.

Regardless of storm intensity, a round of heavy rain and lightning will be moving through the DFW area during this time. That will certainly impact the morning commute and those at bus stops or pick-up and drop-off lines.

Stay weather aware in the morning!

WHEN

Sunday night/Monday morning (midnight - 6 a.m.)

For DFW, this part of the night will be fairly quiet. Storms from earlier in the night will have moved out of the area and most places will be dry.

A different forecast is in place for western and northern North Texas. T-storms will be ongoing into the late night hours with a line of storms forming and moving into western North Texas from around 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. This line of storms could have segments of it that are severe. The main threat will be strong wind gusts up to 60mph. A few instances of up to quarter-size hail are possible as well. The tornado threat is not high, but can't rule out a brief spin-up tornado within the line of storms.

Monday morning (6 a.m. - noon)

That line of storms will continue to move west to east across North Texas arriving in the DFW area from around 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. Closer to 6-7 a.m. for western DFW and 8-9 a.m. for eastern DFW.

The severe threat is not high but can't rule out segments of the line that have wind gusts up to 60mph. Once again, the tornado threat is low, but can't rule out a brief spin-up.

Storms will quickly move to the east with most of DFW dry by the late morning to noon hour. Eastern DFW will see this line of storms during the late morning into early afternoon but the severe threat looks pretty low during this time. Eastern North Texas will also clear out through the afternoon.

All of North Texas will be dry with even sunshine coming out during the afternoon into evening hours.

IMPACT

We discussed the severe risk above, but the timing is another issue. The window of opportunity in the metroplex is 6 a.m. - 9 a.m. The line of storms will have heavy rain and lightning, so it will make the morning commute slow in places and make sure the kiddos are safe getting to and from school.

NEED

Simply put, you just need to stay informed. Make sure you have a way to get warnings. You may also want to leave a little early and give yourself extra time to get to where you need to be in the morning.
