DALLAS — Dear Electricity,
This is kind of awkward. But I'm writing to say I took you for granted. And I'm sorry.
You left the house on Sunday and it was a long four days without you. My toothbrush didn’t brush. My air conditioner didn’t condition. My dishwasher didn’t wash. And now I know, I've never given you the credit you deserve.
It's crazy how much you do for me and for all of us. You keep the traffic moving. You keep our food from spoiling. You keep us all connected to the internet.
While you were away, the house was dark. I lit some candles while wishing you'd come back. I sat, barefoot in the backyard, cheering on the power crew that drove here from Florida to work behind my house.
For me, but probably not everyone, your absence was mostly an inconvenience. But it made me realize, in a larger sense, that I've overlooked how truly important you are.
It's you who removes the drudgery of hard work from our lives. We don't have to cut the wood, light the fires and boil the water. Without you and all the comforts you make possible, how many people would even dare to live in the Texas heat? A lot fewer, I bet.
So, the powers mostly back. And everyone's moving on. But I want you to know, I'm not taking you for granted.
This morning you toasted my toast.
And that was super cool.
Love,
David
