DALLAS — Our drought status at the beginning of April did not look good. Every county in North Texas was considered to be in a drought with many counties under severe drought status.
We have had several rounds of showers and thunderstorms this season, but Sunday into Monday's rain brought the most beneficial rain of the year so far. The metroplex reported one to two inches of rain with isolated totals of four to five inches of rain for some counties north. At DFW, 6.77 inches of rain has been recorded for the year so far and 4.66 inches for the spring. We need nearly five inches of rain to catch up to normal.
Early week rain brought a big improvement to our drought monitor.
The latest update released Friday, April 29 shows portions of East Texas out of the drought. Some North Texas counties are also drought-free with Wise county showing almost an entire drought-free county. Unfortunately, Tarrant and Dallas counties are still considered to have severe drought status.
North Texas has several rain chances in the next ten days.
