FORT WORTH, Texas — The results are in. Eight TEXRail trains received a new name this week after Trinity Metro held a train-naming contest to give a new identity to each of the TEXRail trains. A couple of the chosen names seem to pay homage to some DFW sports teams.
Just one TEXRail train, Spike, has been given an official name. Spike was the last of the eight TEXRrail trains to be delivered in 2019. Trinity Metro began rail service to DFW Airport in 2018.
Trinity Metro held a train-naming competition to name the remaining eight trains that move riders between Fort Worth and DFW Airport. The competition drove more than 1,000 responses, according to Trinity Metro.
Zippy, Miles, Ranger, Bluebonnet, Panther, Maverick and Vaquero will be the official names of the seven trains in addition to Spike.
Along with the train's new name, TEXRail will likely get two new stations as Fort Worth plans to extend the rail line about 2 miles south to the medical district, linking Magnolia Avenue and South Main Street. A federal grant is needed before the city can begin construction.
Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker also recently announced a new Urban Rail Committee Supporting Economic Development & Tourism. The committee, formed in partnership with Trinity Metro, will explore solutions for Urban Rail and transportation in the city.
