DFW broke ground on its $1.6 billion Terminal F project. Here's what it'll look like.

DALLAS — The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) moved some dirt at the site of its future Terminal F on Tuesday. 

The $1.6 billion project will add 15 gates in Terminal F, while rebuilding and reconstructing another 37 across Terminals A and C.

This marks the airport’s sixth terminal and first new terminal construction project since 2005. Terminal F will feature a 400,000 square foot concourse alongside an expanded Terminal E, which is adding 100,000 square feet to its current footprint. That space will include new check in, security and baggage claim areas. 

DFW Airport designed Terminal F with future expansion and more gates in mind, touting its scale and use of technology in the development of modular construction. There’s a pre-fabrication site where modules are built, then transferred across the airfield for installation. 

Michael Whelan, president of Archer Western Building Group, shared, DFW and our team are embarking on the largest modular project to date. We’ve designed modules that are double the size and more complex with modular wall systems, mechanical rooms, interior finishes."

DFW Airport said it increases efficiency and expedites the construction timeline because work can take place simultaneously at two sites.

Archer Western and its partners have committed to award 30% of its contracts for this project to women and minority-owned businesses. Whelan adding that amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars of investment in North Texas vendors.

DFW Airport CEO Sean Donohue marveled at the work taking place, “Because we are really building 2 new terminals as we demolish and reimagine terminal C over the next several years as well.”

Donohue noting, “You’re going to see airplanes launching behind you literally going to almost every continent in the world today from DFW.” During the groundbreaking ceremony, Donohue announced that previous estimates anticipated DFW Airport would reach 100 million passengers by 2030. To enthusiastic applause, he revealed, “We’ll actually hit 100 million customers by 2028.”

The new Terminal F is anticipated to be completed in 2027.
