DALLAS — The holiday travel season is among us. And that means millions of Americans will be flooding airports over the next two weeks, flying to and from Thanksgiving destinations.
So don't be surprised to hear the old cliche: "Pack your patience."
Especially in the airport security lines.
The good news for North Texas travelers is that wait times here might not be *too* bad.
Upgraded Points, which covers the airline and travel industry, released a new study this week on the standard TSA holiday wait times by airport. The publication gathered the wait time data through open records from the TSA.
The data showed the average wait time at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is 4.3 minutes, while the wait time at Dallas Love Field is 7.6 minutes.
The data didn't indicate the reason for the difference in wait times at the two North Texas airports.
One difference between the airports is how the security lines are setup; DFW has multiple security checkpoints at each of its five terminals. Dallas Love Field, which does not have multiple terminals, has the one main security checkpoint.
Both of those wait times were well below the three worst in the country:
- Jacksonville (12.0 minutes)
- Newark (11.7 minutes)
- New York's John F. Kennedy International (9.6 minutes)
Orlando (9.2 minutes), Fort Lauderdale (9.1 minutes) and Denver (9.1) also were on the more lengthy side of wait times.
And on the speedy side? San Antonio topped the list at an average wait time of 1.4 minutes.
All in all, if you're flying within Texas, the wait times might not be too bad. If you're connecting through Florida or Denver, that might be a different story.
