ADDISON, Texas — A Texas State Trooper was critically injured after a car hit them while working an accident on the Dallas North Tollway, officials said.
A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper responded to a single-vehicle crash around 12:41 a.m. Dec 16 in the northbound lanes of the Dallas North Tollway near Keller Springs Road, the Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed.
While investigating the incident, the trooper was hit by a yellow Mini Cooper and taken to a hospital where he remains in critical condition, the department said in a press release. The condition of the driver involved in the initial crash is unknown and weather may have been a factor in the crash, officials said.
A private security guard who stopped to assist in the initial crash was also struck by the Mini Copper, officials said.
The driver of the yellow Mini Copper was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and is cooperating with the investigation, Tony De La Cerda, a sergeant with the Texas Department of Public Safety, said in a press conference after the crash. Officials do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
De La Cerda urged motorists to be cautious when passing emergency vehicles in the roadway.
"Slow down as much as you possibly can, put away any distractions and pay attention to the way you're driving," De La Cerda said.
All northbound lanes of the tollway remain closed at Keller Springs Road as of 5:13 a.m., the department said. DPS is investigating the incident, according to the release.
