FORT WORTH, Texas — An intoxicated driver caused a three-car crash that closed portions of Highway 287 early Monday morning near Loop 820 in Fort Worth, officials said. Two of the drivers will be charged as a result of the crash, police said.
The highway was closed around 2:45 a.m. Monday, Nov 11 and reopened around 7:15 a.m., according to the Texas Department of Transportation.
A dark SUV hit a temporary construction barrier in a construction zone on the Highway 287 southbound ramp, according to a statement from Fort Worth police. Construction workers on the scene stopped to help the driver involved in the crash when they were struck by an Infiniti, police said.
The two occupants of the Infiniti were seriously injured and had to be extricated from the car, according to police. They were taken to a hospital and are expected to survive, police said.
One other person, standing outside the car when it was struck, was also hit but their injuries are not serious, police said.
The driver of the SUV was arrested on the scene and charged with a DUI, according to an update from Fort Worth police. The driver of the Infiniti will be charged with intoxication assault when released from the hospital, police said.
The incident is under investigation and the freeway will be shut down "for some time," police said.
