Fatal crash shuts down I-635 Saturday morning, police say

According to Irving police, a vehicle was traveling eastbound on I-635, and for an unknown reason, went into the center median.

IRVING, Texas — All eastbound and westbound lanes were shut down for hours on Interstate 635 near State Highway 161 President George Bush Turnpike due to a fatal crash, according to Irving police.

Irving police told WFAA the crash happened about 12:40 a.m. Saturday and completely shut down the highway in both directions. The Irving Police Department posted to its social media pages, saying they anticipated the closure to last about six to seven hours due to the severity of the crash and the need to document evidence on both sides of the freeway.

According to Irving police, a vehicle was traveling eastbound on I-635, and for an unknown reason, went into the center median. The vehicle flipped multiple times and ejected a passenger, police said. The passenger died from their injuries. The driver of the vehicle was in "serious condition" at last check, Irving police said.

TxDOT cameras showed significant backup on Saturday morning around 7 a.m. Traffic was being diverted off of I-635 onto northbound SH 161, cameras showed. Eastbound lanes reopened just after 7 a.m., and westbound lanes reopened just before 9 a.m., police said.
