The pedestrian fatally struck by a vehicle on Texas 161 in Irving on Tuesday morning was an 11-year-old boy who was believed to be on his way to school, police said.
The crash happened about 7 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the highway at Rochelle Road.
The driver of the vehicle stopped and immediately called 911, police said. The boy, who was trying to cross the highway from west to east, was pronounced dead at the scene.
His name has not been released.
The boy was believed to be walking to Thomas Haley Elementary School, which is about two blocks east of 161 off West Northgate Drive.
The Irving school district confirmed he was a student,
"We are grieving for the loss of a young life, and we pray for the family and friends most affected by this loss," Irving ISD superintendent Jose L. Parra said in a statement. "Our entire district extends heartfelt condolences to the family at this difficult time."
