Texas sees its largest weekly gas price decrease for the entire year, AAA says

The statewide average for a gallon of unleaded fuel has dropped 16 cents since last week.

TEXAS, USA — The statewide average price for a gallon of unleaded gas in Texas just saw the largest decrease week-over-week in 2022, according to AAA

As of July 7, Texas' statewide gas price average was $4.33 per gallon, down 16 cents from a week ago. On July 5, AAA reported that the weekly decrease at the time was 13 cents down, which led the nation. At this point last year, the statewide average of gas in Texas was $2.81. 

Gas in Texas is the 6th-lowest price in America. South Carolina has the cheapest gas at $4.26 and California has the most expensive at $6.18.

In Texas, the cheapest average price of gas is in Laredo, where it costs $3.98, the only city in the U.S. with an average under $4. The most expensive average price of gas is in El Paso, where it costs $4.44.

  • Beaumont-Port Arthur: $4.38 
  • Corpus Christi: $4.04
  • Dallas: $4.33
  • Fort Worth-Arlington: $4.32
  • Houston: $4.36
  • Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood: $4.26
  • San Antonio: $4.27
  • Tyler: $4.27
  • Waco: $4.22

“The largest weekly decline in 2022 for fuel prices is good news for drivers, but we’re not out of the woods just yet,” said AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster. “Gas prices will remain elevated compared to one year ago and could fluctuate in July, which is typically one of the busiest months in Texas for road trips and fuel demand.”

Here is a look at the gas prices, according to AAA:

The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $4.75, which is 11 cents less compared to a week ago and $1.61 more than the price per gallon at this same time last year, AAA reported.
