DALLAS — You know those humorous and quirky signs you’re accustomed to seeing on highway LED signs? They may soon be a thing of the past.
The Federal Highway Administration recently shared its new 1,100-page manual, which includes guidelines for regulating signs and other traffic control devices.
States have two years to adjust to all of it -- but, basically, officials say signs that have unclear meanings, include references to pop culture or are intended to be funny should be phased out by 2026 because they can be misunderstood or even distracting to drivers.
It's is not a full-on ban, to be clear. But the agency is heavily discouraging these signs' use.
Instead, the Federal Highway Administration said, signs should be "simple, direct, brief, legible and clear," and only used for important information, like warning drivers of crashes, bad weather conditions and traffic delays.
