UPDATE: Woman arrested after refusing to leave car, shutting down parts of SH 183 for several hours

All lanes of eastbound SH 183 between Brown Trail and Industrial Boulevard were closed Sunday, Bedford police said.

BEDFORD, Texas — Police closed all eastbound lanes of State Highway 183 Sunday after a driver refused to leave their car during a traffic stop, officials said.

According to the Bedford Police Department, officers tried to pull a female driver over around noon Sunday due to speeding. Police say the woman did not pull over and called dispatch to tell them she had a gun in her car.

The woman was later identified as Shalunda Marie Hayes, 34. She was arrested and charged with evading arrest, detention with a vehicle, impersonating a public servant, resisting arrest search or transport and unlawfully carrying a weapon.

The woman pulled over, and Bedford police closed the highway shortly before 1 p.m. citing an "active police situation," according to a social media post from Bedford Police. All eastbound lanes of the highway between Brown Trail and Industrial Boulevard were closed for hours.

The driver, who was alone in the car, was seen with her car door open communicating with police, who were equipped with tactical gear, standing nearby. Around 2:40 p.m. a tactical vehicle blocked the road in front of the woman refusing to leave her car.

Just before 3 p.m., police deployed gas and moved toward the car, arresting the woman. According to a statement from Bedford police, the driver was taken to the hospital and will be booked into Euless jail once medically cleared. Hayes's bond amount is set at $14,000.

Police reopened the highway at 3:16 p.m.
