CARROLLTON, Texas — All southbound lanes of the President George Bush Turnpike reopened at I-35 in Carrollton after a deadly crash Monday afternoon.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) closed a portion of the highway Monday afternoon due to a fatal crash at Sandy Lake Road.
A Toyota Camry going southbound became disabled on the turnpike near Sandy Lake Road and the driver, Jose Rojo, 31, got out of the vehicle, and was hit by a GMC Acadia, also going south, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety,
Rojo was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials say.
The driver of the Acadia, Judith Thomas, 76, was not injured, according to officials.
Two others in the vehicle with Rojo weren't injured, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Carrollton police initially reported Monday that "a strand of motorcyclists were in a lane and one got hit by a car" before the investigation was turned over to DPS.
Traffic was snarled for at least four hours during the height of evening rush hour traffic.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
