DALLAS — The Dallas Wings and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) are partnering to help a local organization that helps survivors of family violence.
On Wednesday, March 15, the Wings and WBCA announced they will be collecting supplies and necessities for The Family Place. Established in 1978, The Family Place has long provided safe housing, counseling and skills for families throughout DFW to help curb family violence.
The organization is one of the largest providers for survivors of family violence in the state of Texas. It operates three emergency shelters, which provide 177 shelter beds each night for women, men and children, and three counseling centers.
“The WBCA family of coaches places a high priority on empowering women and young girls. It aligns with our association’s core values,” WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew said. “We are excited to partner with the Dallas Wings and Wings head coach Latricia Trammell to support The Family Place and lift up survivors of family violence — most of them women and children — in the Dallas community.
WBCA and the Wings are encouraging women's sports fans and residents throughout North Texas to help their cause during the WBCA Convention and donate tangible items, such as home and personal goods on site from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30 at the Sheraton Dallas Hotel located at 400 Olive Street. The drive will run from March 30 through April 2.
"Donation drives play an incredibly important role in the success of The Family Place, as many survivors of domestic violence flee their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs,” The Family Place CEO Mimi Sterling said in a news release.

“Donations, like toiletries, clothing, and household items, provide survivors of domestic violence with necessities and offer them a sense of dignity and worth. By receiving donations, clients are able to select items that suit their personal needs, which can be empowering in a time when they may feel powerless,” said Sterling
The WBCA Convention coincides with the NCAA Women’s Final Four, which will take place in Dallas on March 31 through April 2.
